About The Area
Johnson City, along with Kingsport and Bristol
make up the Tri-Cities area of East Tennessee. Home to East Tennessee State University, Freedom Hall and the Carnegie Hotel, Johnson City flourishes with tradition, heritage, and hospitality. The area abounds with natural beauty and fresh mountain air.
Just a few miles down the road is Historic Jonesborough: Tennessee’s oldest town, and the International Storytelling Center.
Enjoy outdoor adventure at Boone Lake, Watauga Lake, and nearby Roan Mountain State Park. Other family-friendly
activities include hiking and biking trails and some of the best trophy trout fishing in the country.
You’ll awaken your Pioneer Spirit when you visit our historical areas and living history sites— like Tipton-Haynes, Rocky Mount and Sycamore Shoals. And just a stone’s throw away, you’ll find world-renowned attractions like Bristol Motor Speedway, Bays Mountain and Barter Theatre.
Just a few miles from Johnson City you can find Shady Valley and Highway 421, a.k.a. The Sripe-ed Snake. There are 489 curves that can be very gentle and tons of fun or vicious and extremely
dangerous, all depending on how well you handle "The Snake".
While you're in the area you might want to head over to Deals Gap a.k.a. The Tail of The Dragon. This place is world famous for the 318 curves in 11 miles of winding mountain road through the heart of the Smoky Mountains.
This road was made for Miatas!!
Another site you might want to take in while you're here is the Grey Fossil Site and Natural History Museum located just down Interstate 26.
